I really enjoy listening to Welcome To Night Vale, Rooster Teeth’s series of podcast and game grumps

What do you enjoy about these podcasts?

I enjoy listening to Welcome To Night Vale because it is funny whilst pretending to be serious, it helps me to relax and lighten up.

I enjoy Rooster Teeth’s podcast because I am familiar with most of the people on the podcast and it is a real life talk show

I enjoy game grumps because they are genuinely funny and interesting people, plus they play video game video so you have something to look whilst listening to them

codes and conventions

speech

  • the manner in which words are spoken.
  • enunciation, pitch, accent, timbre, clarity, etc.
  • prevent “popping” and “fillers” (erm, huh), cursing, being close to the mic.
  • usually formal language.
  • voice track should be equalised in post.

music

  • highly important.
  • sets the mood, tone and setting of a scene.
  • most consider the audience.
  • should not be louder than the speech ( background music ) unless its a solo.

sound

  • ambience sounds.
  • special effects sounds (sfx).
  • 3D perspective ( surround system- like we are there ).
  • aural signposting ( set the scene via noise, sound, voices ).

silence

  • dramatic effect.
  • accentuate a moment.
  • endings of scenes or sections.
  • breaks the dialogue.
  • gives breathing breaks.
  • prevents from switching off.
  • thinking moment.

narrative

  • linear: chronological evolution of events.
  • non linear: builds up argument without a time line.
  • single stranded: one individual presents/analyses theme, can have temporary guest.
  • multi-stranded: two or more presenters discuss theme.

technical elements

sound design

  • Audiologo-Ident]aural mix used on its own to identify a product/service
  • intro- musical welcome/ initial credit
  • outro- musical farewell(shorter)- end
  • (must have both)
  • jingle/ bumper- slogan or vocal line set to an engaging melody

Point of view (POV)

monologue- individual presents own thoughts of a theme

Interview-1:1 semi structured questions to understand themes via experts

Vox populi- structured questions asked to different people

Panel- group of people discus themes

Debate- discussions with opposing sides
